MIMO LTE antenna platforms are not one size fits all

In considering MIMO LTE antenna solutions for your application not all product offerings are equal. In addition, not all solutions will be suitable for your project.

A supplier with a range of many flavours of MIMO LTE antenna can greatly assist your quest for the best possible wireless deployment. This range should cover as a minimum blade antennas, low profile antennas, magnetic antennas and outdoor omni-directional and directional antennas.

A modular range of products allows the customer the choice to pick the correct product option. Take a low profile puck antenna for example, you may have the option of a MIMO LTE permanent mount puck antenna. This however might not quite meet your requirements, but the option of having such an antenna with an integrated WiFI element or an integrated GNSS element might be more suitable. Notwithstanding those options, it may be that you do not want to drill a hole in the skin of vehicle, cabinet or kiosk and a magnetic mount MIMO LTE antenna is preferable. In this case once again, the options of 2 x LTE, 2 x LTE + GNSS or 2 x LTE + WiFi are welcome to help you meet the requirements of your installation.

In terms outdoor MIMO antennas, a similar principle applies. Directional or omni-directional radiation patterns are important and how to mount the antenna, wall, pole or cabinet mount – a solution needs to be able to address these requirements. Also the possibility to marry these antennas with custom length low loss cables such as RF240 and RF400 rather that being offer a fixed length cable solution at 5M.

EAD is excellently placed to help you with this product options. Many of our antenna solutions are based on modular platforms meaning that we can mix and match radiating elements to deliver exactly the antenna our customers need. In addition, we have access to a broad portfolio of world-class products in our SAS product porfolio which augment and enhance our offerings. For one-off single unit requirements, many of our antennas can be purchased via our sister company’s webshop.

4 suggestions for low profile 4G LTE antennas

Roof and enclosure-mounted low profile 4G LTE antennas are in demand as the IoT bandwagon rolls on so here are 4 suggestions for permanent mount puck style antennas for your application:

4G LTE MIMO puck antenna

This is  a two element puck antenna, called the CMO,  incorporating two antenna elements operating from 690-960/1710-2690 MHz for 4G LTE applications.  Permanently mount by way of stud underneath and locking nut, this antenna has a gasket underneath that provides a waterproof seal once mounted. The antenna mounts onto a ground plane or metal surface and has one cable for each antenna element. Ideal for Wireless CCTV, security and broadband applications, the CMO offers robust RF performance in a compact package.

4G LTE + WiFi puck antenna

Based on the CMO antenna mechanical design, this antenna is called the CLW. It offers 1 x 4G LTE element and 1 x dual band WiFi element for permanent mounting onto a groundplane or metal surface. Suitable for applications where concurrent LTE and WiFi communications are required, the antenna lends itself well to fixed and/or mobile installations.

4G LTE MIMO + GNSS puck antenna

The CMG antenna is also very much based on the CMO antenna. It offers 2 x 4G LTE elements, but also with an added active GPS/GLONASS antenna element. This enables LTE communications concurrently with GPS/GLONASS positioning. Mounted on a metal vehicle roof, this antenna provides a watertight and robust solution for mobile IoT installations.

4G LTE, WiFi + GNSS puck antenna

The CLWG antenna is based on the same blueprint as the CMG antenna, however we have replaced 1  x 4G LTE with a dual band WiFi element. This delivers 1 x 4G LTE, 1 x WiFi and 1 x GNSS in compact and robust package suitable for multiband telematics application where installing 2 or 3 antennas is undesirable.

All these low profile 4G LTE antennas are based on a proven common platform that can be customised if required. Please feel free to use our Antenna Configurator to request a solution that can be designed for your application.

New dual band WLAN flexi antenna introduced

The new W-Flex antenna from EAD is a dual band WLAN flexi antenna. Designed for building-in to WiFi devices and terminals often where flat surface for rigid PCB antennas is not available, the W-Flex is an innovative solution.

Based on compact dimensions and a range of cable/connector options, this new antenna is part of a new portfolio of flexible PCB antennas from EAD. Available connectors can include U.FL, RP-SMA and MMCX and can be customer specified to allow ease of compatibility with a variety of WiFi radio modules.

For more information on the W-Flex, please visit our product page. We also recently introduced the L-Flex antenna, a multi-band LTE flexible PCB antenna.

New LTE WiFi GNSS puck antenna now available

Today EAD introduces a new LTE WiFi GNSS puck antenna. We have designed it for vehicle roof or metal surface-mounting. Based on the versatile CPx antenna platform, the CLWG is a discreet and robust antenna. We believe it is ideal for multi-band telematics applications.

As a result of its dimensions, just 106 mm in diameter and 33.5mm in height, this antenna is compact without compromising on performance. As standard, we configure the antenna with three separate cables. One cable each for LTE, WiFI and GNSS. You can customise the cable lengths and connectors as you wish, however we offer 3M cable length and SMA-Male connectors as standard.

We draw your attention to the CLWG’s stable mate, the CMG antenna. The CMG is a 2 x LTE and GNSS puck antenna, part of the same range of robust puck antenna products.

The BUF2400 is an ideal solution for applications where an external bulkhead (panel mount) antenna connector is not required or undesirable and/or detaching the antenna from the terminal during use is to be avoided.

The BUF2400 provides a neat WLAN and Bluetooth antenna solution. For 4G captive mount antennas, you could consider the LTF7270 antenna.

BT-Compact – WiFI quarter wave stub antenna

The BT-ComPact is a WiFi quarter wave stub antenna based on a compact 2.4 GHz Helical antenna design available with either a SMA-Male or a MMCX Straight connector.

Although a custom order and designed for mating to MMCX receptacles on the PCB boards, the MMCX version lends itself well to fixed 2.4 GHz terminal deployments .

The SMA-Male version is designed for terminals where antenna should be externally mounted onto a SMA-Female connector. These can be fixed or mobile devices with a metal enclosure or box thereby offering a groundplane for the BT-Compact antenna.

For a groundplane independent antenna for WLAN and WiFi, take a look at our BKR2400 antenna.

CPW – 2.4/5 GHz Low Profile WLAN puck antenna

The CPW is a WLAN puck antenna and is a tough and durable dual band 2.4 and 4.9-6.0 GHz puck antenna with approx 3 dBi gain on the lower band and 5 dBi on the upper band.

The antenna is a low profile screw-mount antenna requiring a 20mm drill hole. The cable exit is on the underside of the antenna and once mounted is totally enclosed, secure and waterproof. The antenna is secured in place by a nut that is tightened from underneath. The CPW WLAN puck antenna is ideal for Wireless LAN and WiFi applications where a discrete antenna is required, but performance cannot be compromised.

The part number is FCPW35168-XX-XX where XX-XX refers to cable and length and connector type.

A cellular version (CPT) and GSM/3G (CPO) version of this antenna are also available.
